The Tonal's DNA, Transits, and the Hacker Understanding of I Ching
Original Source ↗SI asked me to write to you about the Tonal's DNA, transits, and the hacker understanding of I Ching. This is what I will endeavor to do. The temptation to apply the idea of DNA to ancient cultural traditions has long been in the air. Read Leary's latest book, for instance, where he mixes DNA with Tarot and the Periodic Table. Therefore, I wasn't too surprised when SI came to me with the idea of the Tonal's DNA. As far as I know, he has already given you three diagrams, two of which you can safely forget about. These are private applications of my developments, interesting perhaps only to eggheads like myself.
So, the discussion was about the mirror-like nature of worlds and a unified Tonal matrix. That is, we have two worlds: reality and the island of Dreams, and the Tonal is one, with specific laws, event transits, and a multitude of small living organisms that create a puddle of world-description, describing everything and everyone. (Pardon the pun.)
In one Lucid Dream, Izriga captured an idea about the Tonal that I found interesting, and since in a Lucid Dream the dreamer draws "pure knowledge" from the unknown, and thus the possibility of error is completely excluded, I took up the task of contemplating his innovations. Something came of it, and in this article, you will find the material that interests you. Primarily, I am answering letters which (and forgive me for this audacity, authors) I quote below. SI gave them to me; he said I could do whatever I wanted with them, so no complaints will be accepted. Here are these letters (they are in italics):
Good day, Sergey! We have reviewed the materials on the Tonal's DNA with interest. In our spare time, we conducted some research based on the provided diagrams and a number of questions arose. Could you explain some details (or provide hints)?
So... Let's consider a simple transition at the beginning of the chain (Fig. 1) 2 -> 23. It is clear that hexagram 23 is obtained from hexagram 2 by incrementing its binary representation (we construct the binary representation, assuming the top line is the least significant bit, then add one, and find the hexagram with that representation).
Can we say that a transit is a transformation (in this case, an incrementation) by which one hexagram is obtained from another?
The diagram (Fig. 2) can be constructed by starting from unity and applying two operations in a specific order – "reflection" and incrementation. By adding decrementation to these operations, we get a set with which one can "move" along the Tonal's DNA chain (a little more detail on what is meant by these operations is at the end of the letter).
Now, to the concept of "chromosome."
Each "chromosome" can contain 2 or 4 hexagrams. There are 20 chromosomes in total. Hexagrams within a chromosome can be obtained using "reflection" transformations (e.g., transition 43 -> 44) and "inversion" (transition 43 -> 23). Thus, from each hexagram, three more (in a degenerate case, one) can be obtained using these two transformations. From hexagram 43, the entire chromosome 43/44/23/24 can be obtained. This is elaborated a little more at the end of the letter.
Bearing in mind that "the Tonal's DNA" correlates with reality, what would be the "real" analogues of incrementation, decrementation, reflection, and inversion operations? With what actions in the real world can they be correlated?
In principle, mathematically, a pair of operations is sufficient to "traverse" the entire DNA. However, there are probably certain operations that allow one to get from point A to point B via a shorter path?
Generally, incrementation resembles the ordinary flow of time. Something like "if you do nothing, just wait, the situation will develop on its own." Unfortunately, understanding reflection and inversion is more difficult.
Does the order of hexagrams in a chromosome matter? For example, in diagram 2, the mathematical order is somewhat disturbed. In each column (33/34/19/20), hexagrams are simply sorted by number; for example, instead of 33/34/19/20, it should be 34/33/20/19. Regarding Spam's master key. Essentially, this is diagram 2 with removed repetitions.
Can we conclude from the master key that one can "wander" along diagram 2 using some trick-like paths, skipping chromosomes discarded in Spam's master key? Does this mean that a "step-two incrementation" transit exists? For example, judging by the master key, a transition 12 -> 58 is possible. Is this correct?

P.S. Hexagram transformations. The "reflection" transformation swaps the lines of a hexagram (1<->6, 2<->5, and 3<->4). One can imagine the hexagram being reflected in a mirror. For example, hexagram 43 transforms into 44:
During the inversion transformation, solid lines are replaced by broken lines and vice versa. For example, from hexagram 43, one can obtain 23:
Using these transformations, from each hexagram, three more (in a degenerate case, one) can be obtained. From hexagram 43, the chromosome-forming hexagrams 43/44/23/24 can be obtained.
Hello, Sergey. The Tonal's DNA and Medici Solitaire are essentially similar models. However, the solitaire is a simplified version of working with DNA. For instance, transits in solitaire and DNA can be correlated. In solitaire, two types of transits operate: by suit and by rank. In solitaire, a transit by rank corresponds to a superposition of "inversion" and "reflection" transits in DNA (these are transitions within a chromosome). For example (randomly):
Inversion: hearts <-> spades, diamonds <-> clubs Reflection: hearts <-> diamonds, spades <-> clubs
From one hexagram, we get four of the same "rank" but different "suits," which form a chromosome. How "reflection" and "inversion" transits work is described in detail in the previous letter.
What is common in events encoded by hexagrams from the same chromosome?
A transit by suit corresponds to incrementation and decrementation transformations with all possible steps.
Then we get 4 "suits" and 20 "ranks" of hexagrams. Ideally, we should get 80 hexagrams, but due to degeneracy, we only have 64.
By the way, from the nature of the transformations, it is clear that suits define some qualitative characteristic (emotional attitude?), while ranks define a quantitative one.
You wrote that a change in the level of personal power can serve as a transit (by suit, one might assume). Can a change in emotional attitude serve as a transit?
And also about the degeneracy of chromosomes (in which there are 2 hexagrams instead of 4). There are 8 degenerate chromosomes in total (16 hexagrams). There are two types of degeneracy:
1) reflection(x) = x // 1, 2, 27, 28, 29, 30, 61, 62
For example, the "reflection" transit will not work for such hexagrams.
2) reflection(x) = inversion(x) // 11, 12, 17, 18, 53, 54, 63, 64
And here, both transits (reflection and inversion) work identically.
In Spam's master key, these 8 chromosomes become nodal points.
Is there a special meaning to these nodes?
It was once mentioned that in a Dream, there can be either 5 or 9 Perception Bubbles. This means that during a Dream, either 4 or 8 transits are triggered.
Does this mean that standard templates contain either 5 or 9 hexagrams? And still, what transitions are possible in principle? Can you give an example of all transitions for hexagram 37? (I have no doubt that you can, but will you? ;)) Some transitions are clear from the diagram, but not all.
Further on the analogies between solitaire and DNA. When working with solitaire, one must define Chains of Events. Chains can be completed – events have realized a certain action – and uncompleted. Uncompleted chains consume energy and must be completed.
What corresponds to the completion of a chain in terms of hexagrams?
(In DNA, for example, there are 3 stop codons that define the end of a chain.)
Remember the topic of intent?
"...to impart continuity to perception, there is a constant renewal of adjustment by strengthening certain elements chosen by will."
How can this be explained in terms of DNA? Does it correspond to simply moving to the next hexagram along the chains in Fig. 1? Does the DNA diagram you provided contain all the rules of the Eagle?
And also: a comrade from the "group of comrades" wrote a small program that arranged the hexagrams in chains according to the rules of forming real DNA. That is, 2 chains, the principle of nucleotide complementarity, triplets, and all that. Two chains of 64 hexagrams each were obtained. They can be reduced to the diagrams you proposed.

Hello!...
...When the two parts were joined, pairs were formed whose binary representations are complements of each other. This property is clearly distinguished, but its meaning is not yet entirely clear. A vague assumption emerged: (for example) a position in the labyrinth of events is determined by the numerator - in reality, by the denominator - in a Dream. Then, a transit transition in reality causes a change not only in the position in the labyrinth of events during waking periods but also in the position in the labyrinth of events in the dreaming world. And one should assume the possibility of an inverse relationship. This is just an assumption for now; I hope the Dream Hackers will share their thoughts on it. :) There's another question. The study of the transformation from Fig. 1 to Fig. 2 (the working diagram) revealed a small inconsistency. There, almost everywhere, the numerator is an odd number, and the denominator is an even number. The exception is the pair 30/29 between the small and second large loops. In Fig. 3, this situation also remains. Is this a typo or not? I tried to form the working diagram using my own algorithm, but there's a discrepancy here - either the 30/29 pair needs to be ordered as "odd"/"even," or other pairs turn out inverted. I couldn't find an obvious logic. Please explain, plz.-- Al.
Andrei Khrapovitsky: "I've been looking into these hexagrams. I tossed coins, as written in the book, and thus received a hexagram as a prognosis for the future. In short, every day I learned what would happen tomorrow, and everything came true; rather, it was immediately clear from the text itself, which directly reflected my current situation. I received 4 hexagrams over 4 days. I looked at their arrangement in the Tonal DNA spiral and was truly surprised. They were located next to each other, one row apart (every other, sometimes diagonally), in the middle turn of the 2nd double spiral. Judging by this pattern, progress along the Chains of Events goes through every other row. In each row, there are 2-3 numbers (hexagrams), and upon landing on a particular row, a choice is made from these 2-3 options, though it's unclear by what principle this choice settles on one specific codon. I think Izriga spoke about this – options a, b, c, we take one... According to the descriptions of hexagrams, these options are often of the same nature, similar, for example, a negative or positive streak. Or an interesting effect – 2 very "bad" codons are located next to each other, one row apart and diagonally. Everything aligns. And besides, if one moves in this manner, a complete Chain of Events is created with ups and downs, with common areas for two codons. Though I haven't studied all of this enough yet."
Good day, Sergey, may I ask for help regarding the Tonal's DNA? The idea of constructing chain (1) and (2) is clear. How to obtain the next hexagram from the previous one (in the chain) is also clear. The question is how to correlate this transformation with actions in the world ("rituals" in the context of your article). What exactly needs to be done for a transition characterized by inversion (changing --- to - -), for overturning (when the top line becomes the bottom, the second from the top becomes the second from the bottom, etc.)? Another question. What should be considered a "chromosome"? Generally, perhaps the word "codon" is more suitable here. Let's look at diagram (2). What is a codon here: (9-10) or (9-10-15-16)? If the latter, is it possible to transition directly from one "branch" of DNA to another (i.e., from pair 10 to 15)?

I think you have recalled the details and are ready for further discussion of the topic.
If we take diagram 1 from SI's letter and fold it, based on the concept of "mirror-likeness," we get the following:

This little thing is the Tonal's DNA. Note that some binaries repeat in the chains, sometimes in "direct" and sometimes in "mirror" form – for example, one is tempted to take this diagram and, by folding it, align pairs 43 23 and 44 24 (at the beginning) with pairs 23 43 and 24 44 (at the end). Perhaps this should be done, but then we would need extra coordinates, as a good model cannot be sculpted in two-dimensional space.
"Direct" pairs of binaries:
14 08 - 114 08
09 16 - 09 16
26 45 - 26 45
"Mirror" pairs of binaries:
43 23 - 23 43
34 20 - 20 34
05 35 - 35 05
... and so on
Thus, the middle row of unpaired binaries can be assigned to zero on the y-axis. Then odd rows (-/+ 1, -/+3, and -/+5) will be "mirror" pairs, and even rows will be "direct" pairs.
The sixth rows (peaks of greatest amplitude) are formed by diagonally symmetric pairs. Many binaries find their direct and "mirror" pairs in the same rows in which they themselves are located. This means that the concept of a row plays some important role.
The second ring, composed of low-amplitude arcs, has a marvelous order. Note how it is formed from elements of the larger rings. (Oh, if only I had a brain like our celestial geneticist!) This small ring is the salt of wisdom that will allow you to put our Tonal at your service. It contains the mechanics for realizing human intentions.
Repeating codons form an intricate network of transits. If we assume that the codons in this diagram reflect the universal matrix of the Tonal, then we can very skillfully handle our two worlds (provided we correctly understand the concept of a "codon").
Let's consider what this thing is.
A friend of mine, a deranged yogi, claims that the lines of a hexagram reflect the chakras of the energetic body – from Muladhara to Ajna. The Dream Hackers disagree with such an interpretation. In their opinion, the model is simpler. And indeed, try activating Ajna and Svadhisthana now, and turn off the other chakras. Well? What's the result? No, the ancient sages were not Raja yogis. They were, in my subjective opinion, more pragmatic people.
I will tell you about our understanding of "codon-hexagrams."
Let's consider hexagram 1, "The Creative":

Hexagram 1 of the I Ching says that the first three lines express the inner sphere of an event, and the upper three express the outer sphere. So, there is a "diving dragon" – that is, an intention is created (line 1). A "field" is chosen – the sphere in which the intention will be realized (line 2).
The method of realization is defined – "emerging from oneself" (line 3).
The I Ching recommends impeccability at this stage, and then "there will be no blame" – meaning there will be no negative consequences for us. This phrase "there will be no blame" hints at very serious things, which I will tell you about later.
The stage of external manifestation of an event begins with the inertia of the environment. It is supposed to be overcome by expending effort or time, and by acquiring an intermediary who will be a channel or conductor of your inner impulse into the external environment. A kind of "helper from the other side" (line 4).
Then "the dragon flies to the sky" – the intention is realized without outside help (line 5). Your desire has become the desire of the Eagle. It seems that everything happens by magic – by itself. This stage of the process elevates us to the position of a "great person" (we are visible to anyone).
Further participation in this process would be overdevelopment – a manifestation of self-importance (ChSV), which will subsequently lead to regret (line 6). One shouldn't emulate the "dragon."
Thus, the optimal variant will be hexagram 43, "Breakthrough":

Hexagram 2, Line 1 – intention. The I Ching says that once an intention is expressed, it must be brought to completion, otherwise "there will be blame."
Line 2 – area of application of forces. The I Ching says that this is a shaky zone of "twilight and night" (uncertainty) and that one should not fear it.
Line 3 – method of realization. This stage is by its very nature considered unfavorable, but once the process has begun, we must see it through.
Line 4 advises acquiring a good helper or intermediary, as we ourselves are inadequate in this position. The I Ching says: "let him rather be pulled like a ram."
Line 5 – push "straight through" ("freebie, sir!"). This is the thrill when every action is a good fit, everything succeeds, you are on top. Every word uttered becomes wisdom worthy of tablets.
Line 6 – deed done, relax freely. Don't slow down! Let the cork pop without you!
Five strong lines – this is the needle of a syringe, piercing the Tonal's skin. The sixth weak line is the channel for the injection. Without the channel, you're a thorn in the butt. With the channel, you're a good Doctor Aybolit! You're a person who has brought something new into our world!
I heard that SI recently left your forum. A quite wise move. He completed hexagram 1 and dumped our developments on you. Then, instead of gratitude, you kicked his ass a couple of times. He understood that he had overstayed his welcome (that overdevelopment had begun) and darted into the nearest bushes. That's why I love him. Another would have sat there playing guru. But SI is already far away. He cannot be caught... He can no longer be caught.
Thus, we see that a "codon" is a process in which we play a specific role.
Let's consider the inner sphere (these are all cases where the three upper lines are weak):
- The first line is strong, the others are weak. A situation where you have the means, but no one and nowhere. Or: I have a great idea to make serious money and go south, but HOW?
- The second line is strong, the others are weak. A situation expressed by words like "languishing," "pondering," and "hesitation." Or like that cow that was pale. She got pale, dammit! (Pardon the pun.)
- The third line is strong, the others are weak – the skepticism of an impotent: "I know how it's done, but you won't get it out of me!" Or, let's say: "In principle, I can forgive, but I WILL NEVER FORGIVE ANYONE!!!"
I hope you have grasped our approach, and you will find further correlations between codons and reality yourselves.
Then I will move on to the extremes of the outer sphere. Often people are pawns in someone else's game or play the role of "the masses" in the realization of someone's intentions. Seeing yourself in such situations, you can safely set weak lines in the inner sphere. For example, on August 17, 1998, the oligarchs "fleeced" the country and realized the intention to "make big money." Where are you in such a situation? No, "not in the ass"! You are the fifth and sometimes the sixth strong line. But if you were the fourth strong line, you would be called Mr. Kiriyenko.
Hey, folks! The hacker interpretation of "codons" is simple only at first glance. There are great complexities here, to which the I Ching refers. I have already mentioned one of them – the mechanism of activating "blame," which we are advised to avoid by all means.
When I explored this topic in Lucid Dreams, I "saw" this picture: before me, in empty space, an enormous mathematical model rotated, resembling a galaxy. A kind of causal-event matrix. In one of its sections was something like a "black hole" – a funnel into which tiny sparks were drawn. These were people rushing into the abyss of death. Honestly, I didn't spot the Eagle there.
A force that created this virtual funnel spins all of us. Centripetal rotation brings people closer to the end of their lives. Some of us rotate on the periphery, some at the very maw. The main element is personal power. It allows us to overcome dangerous places where the currents and landscapes of the matrix bring people closer to the dangerous zone of "total suction." The speed of rotation and the direction of movement are also important. Cunning navigators know how to use the current for their maneuvers. They can sail into the lowest regions of the funnel and then rise to the periphery, physically becoming sometimes old people, sometimes strong and young. The depth of the funnel is related to aging. A small amount of power, like a weight, pulls you down. Conversely, skillful navigators, like dross, glide along the surface, oblivious to the circles passed and years lived.
But the strangest thing about this vision was the following. My mathematical model also had other places, far from the funnel. Vast spaces shrouded in a Wall of Fog. In the distance, hollows with sparks of consciousness of other beings were discernible – hollows, not a funnel. Along the perimeter of our singular region (in the center of which was a "black hole" or "the Eagle's beak"?) were symbols and signs. And what else would you expect from a mathematical model? And in the near row of these symbols, I suddenly recognized the hexagrams of the I Ching.
It is difficult for me now to convey the interconnection of these hexagrams with the structure of the funnel (and the entire causal-event matrix). But "blame" in the interpretation of hexagrams is a sharp descent into the funnel. A kind of internal current that pulls you down. I hate all karmic interpretations, but they contain precisely this meaning – an incorrect action causes the emergence of "blame," which weakens your personal power and deprives you of many sweet opportunities.
So, the burden of our uncompleted Chains of Events is indeed a burden. Playing with the current is mortally dangerous, but you will not become a "navigator" if you do not test the strength of your "sails." By sails, I mean the strong lines of the hexagrams. The fields of the causal-event matrix are tuned to attract people with certain configurations of everyday situations. This thesis needs clarification. Losers and winners cluster in different areas of the matrix; criminal types rarely encounter "spiritualized" people. We are all carried in a circle, but we traverse our path along different trajectories. Suicides choose the most desolate places. Unlike them, Dream Hackers quickly bypass all tempting corners and gather around SI, who has, for some time, become so d... (no, I meant "far-sighted") that he doesn't sink at all.
And again, not everything is so simple, gentlemen. It would be very boring if our life were determined by a single hexagram or their sequential progression. We would then each sit on our own little hill and not experience the diversity of the universe. In reality, each of us conducts several solo parts simultaneously, plus participates in a hundred plays of other people, and each of these roles implies its own rank of the situation. That is, you – in all your magnificence – are an object of application for many forces of the causal-event matrix. Each of your situations at each level of being, with varying force, pulls you towards a certain zone of causes and effects, and collectively you fly through the matrix like a ball in a pinball machine. You have a criminal friend who has tasted prison food (carried to hexagram N). You believe in God, but you like Buddhism and shamanism (flying to hexagram G, which fills you with shame for polytheism and deprives you of spiritual integrity). At work, you are an executor (you do what you're told), but no, you want to command (this tears you between two causal-event fields, which means it deprives you of personal power, leads to the emergence of "blame," and subsequent illnesses).
And then clever types appear, gamblers and hexagram-makers, who hint at some fabulous path to a distant Eldorado. Will you really listen to them? Will you really follow in their footsteps? Will you take on another unbearable cross? Calm down, guys. You already have a considerable burden without us! Before tackling the Tonal's "crack," work on yourself. Clear out the clutter in the attic, clean the living room. Shake out the dusty rugs of childhood and get rid of accumulated problems. And only then invite us over.
Otherwise, we will be a burden to you. Otherwise, you will be a burden to us. "And to those who go to bed, a peaceful sleep."
I hope I have answered all your questions. If not, write somewhere. And if your intention is strong, the question will reach me somehow.
