I would like to share a hypothesis. And hear what you think about it.
Why do different people have very similar maps of the dream world? Here is one possible answer (I do not know if it is true). If one turns to the ancient Daoists, they also speak of the directions of light, but they connect them with internal organs. And since, without a doubt, a sleeper is in closer contact with their body than a waking person – perhaps various elements are nothing other than symbols of internal organs? Here I have also made a diagram to illustrate the ideas of the Daoists.
