I believe she went insane due to an awful indulgence in her feeling of wretchedness and a desire to become significant. Instead of accepting her life and trying to improve it in reality, she allowed herself to hear voices telling her that in a past life she was Anna Pavlova, and in the life before that..., and that in this incarnation the fate of the world depended on her, but malevolent forces suppressed her, etc., etc. Then she began to feel as if she was being devoured alive and other such passions. To my advice to turn away from these voices and go to church (as there is a powerful tool against such things there), she responded with a torrent of further nonsense. Her situation suited her... :-( Personally, I have never had to study with gurus like those described by SI and Dok. Perhaps my intuition told me where not to venture.
